Hiking emergency kit: the ten essentials
Most hiking emergencies are small things that get worse: a twisted ankle, a wrong turn, a storm, or dark arriving early. The classic “ten essentials” list covers them.
The ten essentials
- Navigation: a paper map and compass, not only a phone.
- Light: a headlamp and spare batteries.
- Sun protection: sunglasses, sunscreen, a hat.
- First aid: a compact first aid kit.
- Knife or multitool: multitool.
- Fire: lighter and waterproof matches.
- Emergency shelter: an emergency bivvy.
- Extra food: ration bars keep for years in a pack.
- Extra water: a bottle and a filter.
- Extra clothes: a warm layer and a waterproof.
Add a whistle and tell someone where you’re going and when you’ll be back.
